Baan Choomsang Vegetable Garden
Before
After
Baan Choomsang requested funding for a vegetable garden in 2006. This completed garden allows the school to provide healthy lunches for their students, many of whom are otherwise unable to bring lunch. Their program also involves getting the students to learn how to grow the food in the garden – students are in charge of the health of the vegetable garden. This is an important skill for students as once they leave school most will need a trade to earn money. Jobs in the area a limited so a skill such as this provides enormous benefit for these students.
Finally the excess vegetables are sold in the local market and the funds go directly into school infrastructure projects. This program allows the school to be more sustainable and less reliant on outside funding. Students learn to buy, sell and manage money through this side of the project.
